Casting or founding is shaping
of metal by melting and pouring into a mold. Casting of silver
jewelry is consistent and time effective but it is only a means of
reproduction. It's a good designer and a method of producing that first
master sample that is necessary for success in the jewelry casting
business. Top of the line casting equipments are utilized to produce the
silver jewelry.
The two most common problems in casting silver jewelry are fire scale
and porosity. Silver jewelry is vacuum cast in a neutral gas environment
which helps eliminate both of these problems. The use of hi-tech casting
equipment gives the quality and consistency to provide with a silver
jewelry that keeps the customers satisfied.
Process of Casting Jewelry
Most castings, especially large ones, are made in sand molds. Sand,
mixed with a binder to hold it together, is pressed around a wooden
pattern that leaves a cavity in the sand. Molten silver is poured into
the cavity and allowed to solidify. Permanent metal molds are used to
make many small, simple parts; shell molding gives greater accuracy for
a large volume of semi precision parts. A two-step process, investment
casting, produces small, complex shapes. Wax or plastic replicas of the
parts are molded in accurate metal molds. When the whole mold is heated,
the replica melts, leaving behind a cavity into which silver is poured.
